Central Balkan is a natural park comprising part of Zlatishko-Tetevenski ridge and Troyansko-Kaloferski ridge of Stara planina. It was declared protected zone on an area of 31.10.1991. The natural park spreads on an area of 73,261.80 hectares with above the sea-level from 550 to 2,376m (Botev peak). There are 9 reserves on its territory: Boatin, Tzarichina, Kozya Stena, Steneto, Stara Reka, Dzhendema, Northern Dzhendem, Sokolna and Peeshti Skali. The largest massif of century-old European oak natural forests is situated here - in this protected territory. There are forests of fir-tree, spruce, white fir,usual and Hop-hornbeam, European Black Pine, etc. There is a denuded of forests zone on the territory of the park spreading on 27,650 hectares in which the sub Alpine bushes of Siberian juniper, blackberries, Alpine and sub Alpine meadows, rocky massifs, canyons, waterfalls, caves, abysses prevail. There are 1850 vegetative species (90 of them are rare and endangered) and 208 kinds of vertebrates on the territory of the Central Balkan reserve. The park is of world importance for preservation of biological diversity. The territory of the national park is situated in four administrative regions: Sofia, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora and Lovech.

Dzhendema Reserve is a deep valley on Byala River, tributary to Stryama River. It cuts to more than 1,000m and is rocky and difficult to reach. The river formed many waterfalls and rocky cauldron. The reserve was declared protected zone in 1953 on an area of 4,220.20 hectares. There are rocky massifs, waterfalls, caves, massif of century-old beech forests, inaccessible rocky cliffs, abysses. The reserve has a rich flora and fauna. It is inhabited by wild goats. Dzhendema is a biosphere reserve situated on the land of town of Karlovo, Plovdiv region.
Elenova Gora Reserve is situated in the region of Dolno Sahrane village, Pavel Banya municipality, Stara Zagora region. It was declared protected zone in 1961 aiming to preserve of century-old virginal beech forest. The reserve is situated on an area of 53.70 hectares in the central part of Stara planina.
Kamenshtitza Reserve was declared protected zone in 1984 aiming to preserve of ecosystems of oaks (Quercus sessiliflora Salisb.). The reserve is situated in the region of Enina village, Kazanlak municipality, Stara Zagora region. It comprises an area of 1,018.40 hectares in Shipchensko-Tetevenski ridge of Stara planina.

Chamdzha Reserve was declared protected zone in 1949 and it was listed in higher category in 1999 as a well-kept reserve. It is situated in the region of Hristo Danovo village, Karlovo municipality, Plovdiv region on a protected territory of 66.40 hectares. The aim of its announcement is preservation of natural deposit of European Black Pine. The state forestry in Rozino is taking care for preservation of the region.
Stara Reka Reserve is situated in the vicinity of town of Karlovo, Plovdiv region. It was declared protected zone in 1981 aiming to preserve of unique ecosystems on an area of 1,974.70 hectares. The state forestry in Karlovo is taking care for preservation of the region.
Leshnitsa Reserve is situated on the region of Yasenovo village, Kazanlak municipality, Stara Zagora region. It was included in the list of protected territories in 1984 aiming to preserve characteristic ecosystems on an area of 390 hectares. The state forestry in Kazanlak is taking care for preservation of the region.
