The town of Plovdiv is the district center with a population of 340 000 inhabitants. It lies 147 km southeast of Sofia. Plovdiv is the municipal center of 18 settlements. The town is situated in the Upper Thracian Valley along both banks of the Maritza River. Plovdiv is one of the oldest towns in Europe. It dates back to the time of Troy and is older than Rome, Athens and Constantinopole. In 1975 were discovered the remains of a building from the period of the Cretan-Mycenaean culture measurable only to the finding on the Knosos Island.
