The town of Bansko (Blagoevgrad district) has a population of 9 000 inhabitants and is a municipal center with 7 component settlements. The town is situated on a plateau at the northeastern foot of Pirin Mountain at an altitude of 925 m. Bansko lies 59 km southeast of the district town of Blagevgrad. The town is a famous winter resort with a unique Revival architecture, lifestyle and culture. More than 150 houses in the town are proclaimed for architectural monuments. The archaeological findings in the region show that it has been populated since the Ancient times. As a separate settlement Bansko appeared in the registry books for the first time in 1576. During XVII-XVIII the town had an economic growth and turned into a craftsman's and trade center.
