The lake is reached in about 60 minutes from Boyana district. The lake is artificially created during the construction of the Vitosha Sofia Water plumbing in 1906. Previously it was a marsh, fed by several springs.
Today, Boyana Lake is an important habitat for a number of amphibian species, such as the brown toad, the big water toad, the small toad, the trout, the Balkan trout, the crucian (Carassius), the crested triton (Triturus vulgaris), the carp.
The presence of these species gives special value to the Boyana Lake, as they are among the sites of conservation of the European natural heritage.
The trail drifts through the woods. Along the way there are two fountains and one small rock chapel of St. Pantaleimon. There are places for eating and resting.
The Boyana Lake - Boyana Lake Circular Route is suitable for a half-day walk in the mountains during almost all seasons.
