Few are aware of the fact that Bulgaria has saved Europe four times throughout history.
The first time was in 696 when the founder of the Bulgarian state Khan Asparuh defeated the Pechenegs. They were a big nomad tribe which had the ambition to plunder the whole Old Continent.
The second time was when Asparuh’s heir-Khan Tervel saved Constantinople from the year-long Arab siege. With this battle he stopped the ambitions of the Caliphate to attack Europe again for many years to come.
The third time was when Khan Kubrat widened the European borders by defeating the 40-thousand army of the Avars and dozens of other nomad tribes, which had headed for the western part of the continent.
The fourth time was when king Svetoslav destroyed the 25-thousand Tatar cavalry and contributed to the defeat of the Golden Horde, which was threatening to sweep away Europe.
