The Peshtera monastery “Saint Nikolay”

The Peshtera Monastery "Saint Nikolay" lies at a distance of 4 km from the village of Peshtera and 7 km from the town of Zemen, Pernik District. From a gold honorary diploma given to the monastery from King Ivan Alexander in 1348 is understood that there was an old Bulgarian monastery at the site. Where exactly were the buildings and how they looked like will become known after future excavations. One of the founders of the present-day monastery was the monk Simeon helped by his son. The Turks hung the father but the son managed to escape in the Rila Monastery. The monastery was renovated in 1840 for which speak the preserved works of Dimiter Molerov in the church. At their retreat from this region the Ottoman Turks burned the monastery. After the Liberation the survived church was reconstructed. The monastery has some interesting icons of "Teodor Stratilat" and "Teodor Tiron" and the stone icon of "Saint Nikola" from 1853.
