The nunnery "Pokrov Presveta Bogoroditza" is situated in the center of the town of Samokov. The monastery was established at the end of XVIII c. during the period of abbess Fota. The nuns at first inhabited the house of the founder of the monastery. In 1837-1839 a big church was built with housing buildings around it. The monastery's church is a big three-nave pseudo-basilica, typical for the late Revival period. The church was built of river stones and thin layers of bricks plastered with mortar. Interesting is the carved gold-coated iconostasis. It is composed of traditional elements including big icons and an apostles' frieze. Stylized plant motives with a combination of stylized representatives of the animal world were used such as: birds, fish, and quadrupeds. The big iconostasis icons were made by the artist from Samokov Hristo Dimitrov. From the mural decorations have survived only a small part mainly at the vaults. There are precious icons of "Saint Nikola", "Saint Joan Zlatoust" and "The three saints". The monastery was an important spiritual centre. Here raised the nephew of abbess Fota - Konstantin Fotinov, a prominent Bulgarian literary figure.
