The Boboshevo monastery “Saint Dimiter”

The Boboshevo Monastery "Saint Dimiter" is situated on the eastern slope of the Ruen peak at a distance of 4 km from the town of Boboshevo. The monastery was established during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. From the old monastery complex is preserved only the church which is decorated with magnificent murals. It is a single-nave one with a semi-cylindrical vault and a double-layer roof. The murals of the church follow the decorative system of the middle ages for decorating Christian temples. Among the traditional settings can be discerned the scenes of the earthly sufferings of Jesus with their dynamics and power of expression. The mural paintings play a significant role in the Bulgarian art from XV c. The iconostasis of the church is now in the National Art Gallery. It is one of the earliest in Bulgaria dating from XVII-XVIII c. During the time of the Ottoman yoke here was preserved the Bulgarian literary tradition.
