Pottery

Pottery is perhaps the oldest Bulgarian craft. In Antiquity the work of potters was perceived as a kind of activity for bringing life to the rough material, thus depriving it of evil influences. Some ceramics are undecorated and without glaze. Others, however, are genuine works of art: pitchers, dishes, and bowls. Their decoration is done with mineral dyes in yellow, green, brown, red, blue.

A special technique called ‘’sgrafito’’ was used during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom as a king’s table pottery. It is a medieval method of decoration: by means of a sharp object, stick or needle, geometrical, floral motifs and zoomorphic figures are drown with white engobe on the wet surface of the pots. The effect is evident after backing and the natural color of clay is preserved.
