The monastery “Saint Kozma and Damyan”

The Monastery "Saint Kozma and Damyan" is situated in the mountainous slopes of the Rhodope Mountains at a distance of 3 km north of the village of Kuklen, Asenovgrad Region. It is believed that the monastery existed in the Middle Ages and the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. There is exact evidence for its activity as an important cult and literary centre from XVII and XVIII c. It can be found in the rewritten manuscript books preserved in the libraries of the towns of Sofia and Plovdiv. The present-day outlook of the monastery includes buildings from XIX and XX c. The main church is a cross-dome stone building. Part of the preserved murals date from 1862.
