The Rhodope Mountains spread at 14,737sq km and 12,233 sq km are on Bulgarian territory, there rest - in Greece. The average above sea-level height is 785m. The Rhodope Mountains are divided in Western and Eastern Rhodopes. The highest peak is Golyam Perelik which is 2,191m high.

Dupkata Reserve is situated in the Western Rhodopes on an area of 1,210.80 hectares. It was declared protected zone in 1956. There are many forests on the reserve's territory - Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris), spruce, beech, usual oak (Quercus sessiliflora Salisb.). The area is populated by deer, roe, wild goats, wood-grouse capercailzie. Dupkata is a biosphere reserve situated in the region of Fotinovo village, Batak municipality, Pazardzhik region.

Mantaritza reserve is situated in the Western Rhodopes on the land of Rakitovo town, Pazardzhik region. It was declared protected zone in 1968 on an area of 1,069.20 hectares. The main vegetative plants in the reserve are: natural spruce forests, mixed forests of beech, fir-tree and spruce. The animals that live there are: wood-grouse capercailzie, bear, wild boar, deer, roe, etc. Mantarnitsa is a biosphere reserve.

Beglika Reserve is situated in the Western Rhodopes and comprises an area of 1,463.1 hectares. It was declared protected zone in 1960 on smaller territory than today. Later it was enlarged. There are natural coniferous forests on the territory of the reserve, mainly of spruce, endemic and relic vegetative plants. One could find bears, martens, wood-grouse capercailzie, hazelhen,Boreal owl (Aegolius funereus). There is a great number of relic vegetation in Beglika. The reserve is situated in the administrative borders of Batak municipality, Pazardzhik region.

Chervenata Stena (The Red Wall) Reserve is situated in the Rhodopes. It was declared protected territory in 1962. The biosphere reserve spreads on an area of 3,029 hectares. There are large forests massifs of European Black Pine (Pinus nigra), beech forests, elm trees, several kinds of maple and oak, usual and frutescent hornbeam. The flora in the reserve consists of great number of endemic, relic and rare plant species habitats. Some of the animals in the reserve are: bear, wild cat, Balkan wild goat, bats, eagles, hawks, falcons, hazelhen, owl, etc. The canyon-like valley of Sushitsa river could be found here. The Bachkovo monastery is very near. Chervenata Stena reserve is situated on the land of Bachkovo village, Asenovgrad municipality, Plovdiv region.

Kupena Reserve is situated on the land of town of Peshtera, Pazardzhik municipality in the Western Rhodopes. It was established in 1961 and later the protected territory was changed. It spreads on 1,761.10 hectares and was declared biosphere reserve. The area included in it possesses preserved natural landscape, different lay, geologic structure, flora and fauna. The landscape was enriched from the presence of natural lakes and picturesque rocky formations with beautiful landscapes. There are century-old forests of spruce, Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris), white fir, beech and mixed trees on the territory of the reserve. The most widely spread plantations are of beech trees aged between 80 - 140 years but there are also forests aged between 160 - 170 years. Some of fauna representatives in Kupena are: wild goat, wild cat, squirrel, roe, red deer, brown bear. Some of the birds in the reserve are: wood-grouse capercailzie, cuckoo, fowls-eating hawk (Aceipiter gentilis), golden eagle, common buzzard, etc.

Izgoryaloto Gyune Reserve is in the town of Krichim, Krichim municipality, Plovdiv region. It was declared protected zone in 1949 and was listed in higher category in 1999. The aim was to preserve the natural deposits of Greek juniper on an area of 29.30 hectares.

Momchilovski Dol Reserve was declared protected zone in 1968 on a territory of 31.10 hectares aiming to preserve the Black Pine forest. The reserve was listed in higher category in 1999. It is situated on the land of Momchilovtsi village, Smolyan municipality, Smolyan region.

Soskovcheto Reserve was declared protected zone in 1968 on an area of 177.50. The aim was to preserve the century-old spruce forest. Soskovcheto is situated in the region of town of Smolyan.

Kazul Cherpa Reserve is situated on the land of Zhenda village, Chernoochene municipality, Kardzhali region. It was declared protected zone in 1951 aiming to preserve natural European Black Pine (Pinus nigra) forests. It was listed in higher category in 1999 as a well-kept reserve. Kazul Cherpa is situated on an area of 39.90 hectares in the Eastern Rhodopes.

Boraka Reserve is situated in the village of Sarnitsa, Mineralni Bani municipality, Haskovo region. It was declared protected zone in 1966 aiming to preserve of natural European Black Pine forests. Boraka was listed in higher category in 1999 as a well-kept reserve on an area of 11.10 hectares in the Northern slopes of the Eastern Rhodopes.

Kastrakliy Reserve is situated in the village of Borino, Borino municipality, Smolyan region on an area of 124 hectares. It was declared protected zone in 1968 aiming to preserve of virginal century-old European Black Pine forest.

Kazanite Reserve on the land of the village of Mugla, Smolyan municipality, Smolyan region. The reserve was declared protected zone in 1968 aiming to preserve the original wild nature. Kazanite spreads on a territory of 124 hectares from the Rhodopes hill of Mursalitsa in the Western Rhodope Mountains. The state forestry in Mugla is taking care for preservation of the region.

Shabanitsa Reserve was declared protected zone in 1956 and listed in higher category in 1999 as well-kept reserve. It is situated on the land of village of Trigrad, Devin municipality, Smolyan region. The aim was to preserve the century-old beech and spruce forest on an area of 22.60 hectares. The reserve is protected by the state forestry of Trigrad.

Chamlaka Reserve was declared protected zone in 1956 and was listed in higher category as well-kept reserve in 1999. It is situated in the town of Momchilgrad, Kardzhali region. Its aim was to preserve the natural European Black Pine (Pinus nigra) forests on an area of 5.40 hectares.

Borovets Reserve has an area of 35.90 hectares. It is situated on the land of Raven village, Momchilgrad municipality, Kardzhali region. Borovets was included in the list of protected territories in 1951 and in 1999 was listed in higher category as well-kept reserve. There are natural European Black Pine forests on the territory of the reserve.

Valchi Dol Reserve was declared protected zone in 1980 on an area of 774.70 hectares. Valchi Dol is situated in the village of Boynik, Krumovgrad municipality, Kardzhali region. Its aim was to preserve the only natural colony of Griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) in Bulgaria.

Amzovo Reserve is situated in the region of town of Smolyan, Smolyan municipality, Smolyan region. Amzovo was included in the list of protected territories in 1968 and was listed in higher category and well-kept reserve in 1999. It spreads on an area of 30 hectares. The aim was to preserve of the Lycopodium alpinium.
